Humanistic Implications of the English Studies in the New Era

摘要 高等教育研究者们对英语专业所秉持的理念必须兼顾我们当今所面对的日新月异的现代社会变化和高科技发展,以及由此导致的学科建构的复杂性。我国高校英语专业课程设置的革新以及多样化人才培养目标的设定,应该为其专业框架带来守正出新和更具拓展性的变化,而不仅仅是把复合型培养作为唯一的解决方案。就此而言,对英语专业内涵的认识至关重要;它首先是一门真正意义上的人文专业,这一点再强调也不为过。本文从"英语专业的‘宿命’""多元化时代的内化教育""高科技时代英语人文教育的超越""文化精通与专业能力"和"英语专业的开放式‘回归’"五个方面讨论英语专业的人文教育内涵和人才培养模式,以期引发对英语专业的自我认同感和可持续发展的深层思考。 Higher education researchers, in formulating critiques of English as an academic discipline, must take into account the complexities of the disciplinary structure posed by the growing plurality of our modern society and the development of advanced science and technology. The ongoing reconfiguration of the curricula of the English studies and the setting of the objectives for the training of diversified talents should bring about more innovative and expansive changes in the traditional framework, as opposed to relying on the usual "major with minor" as the only solution. In this regard, the understanding of the connotation of the "English studies" as a discipline is very important;it is primarily a humanities discipline in its true sense, and this can never be over emphasized. Towards this end, this article seeks to present a coherent literature review on certain aspects that influence the perceptions of the implications of the humanities in the English discipline, as well as some approaches to the cultivation of the English majors. Through the following five topics-the "fate" of the English discipline,"self-cultivation" in an era of cultural plurality, prioritizing humanities education in the era of advanced science and technology, cultural and professional proficiency, and broadening of the English discipline while retaining the humanities as the core-the author hopes to initiate an in-depth reflection on the disciplinary "identity" and sustainable development of the English studies in China.
