What Was China to Korean People?:A Reading of Tongnipsinmun

朝鲜第一份民办报纸《独立新闻》由开化派政治家徐载弼创办。在创办之初,徐载弼等开化派知识人士将中国看作朝鲜实现文明开化的绊脚石,着力塑造蔑视中国的认识。然而,当他们看到中国的维新派发动戊戌变法并得到了光绪帝的支持之时,又流露出对中国的羡慕之情,对中国的认识也开始发生变化,不再是一味蔑视中国,而是将中国看作一面镜子,以中国的状况来警示朝鲜人觉醒。《独立新闻》对中国认识的变化,与当时朝鲜的局势的变化以及开化派知识人士在朝鲜的处境紧密相关。

Tongnipsinmun,the first private newspaper in Chosun,was founded by Kaihua politician Xu Zai-bi.At the beginning of its founding,Xu Zai-bi and other Kaihua politicians regarded China as a stumbling block for the realization of civilized enlightenment in Chosun,and focused on shaping the contempt for China.However,when they saw that the Chinese reformists launched the Reform Movement of 1898 with the support of Emperor Guangxu,they showed their envy to China.The understanding of China also changed.Instead of blindly despising China,China is seen as a mirror to warn Chosun people to wake up.The changes in China's understanding were closely related to the changes in the situation in Chosun at the time and the situation of the Kaihua faction in Chosun.
