Aconite, a commonly-used Chinese medicine, is indicated that it should be cut into eight pieces in many prescriptions of Treatise on Febrile Diseases. But the indication is rarely found in other ancient works about Chinese Herbology. This article shows that Shushu theory is helpful to understand the reason of Zhang Zhongjing prescribed aconite to be cut into eight pieces in those prescriptions. And the result reveals that Zhang followed the law of "followed the rules of yin and yang and adjusted Shushu the ways to cultivate health" of Huangdi Neijing when writing those prescriptions.
