IN the coastal areas of Weihai, Yantai, and Qingdao in the Jiaodong Peninsula of east China’s Shandong Province, there are many residential buildings that share a unique design. The roofs are made of a light brown and grayish white local kelp, and local residents call the houses seaweed bungalows or kelp houses.
