This lecture by Spiro Kostof in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan in 1988 is a summary of his revolutionary academic career, with accounts of his changing mindsets and corresponding academic environments against the greater social and historical backgrounds, from Yale where he was a graduate student to Berkeley where he was the professor of architectural history. His critical reflections on the tradition of Western architectural historiography reflect the development in the field of architectural history in the United States in later 20 th century and the breakthroughs in architectural historiography. He argues that architectural history should not be limited to the studies of the aesthetic evolutions of formal styles, and it should become the forum where people can have impacts on the future of their living environment.
