The international community has paid increasing attention to the issue of climate change in recent years, and climate change documentaries have gradually become a major genre as well.As a global risk which points to the “future”,climate change is challenging the traditional thinking based on the “past” or “present” of various disciplines. Therefore,it is necessary to explore new conceptual tools to face the “future”.Inspired by this “future-oriented” approach, this paper examines and compares the interpretations of documentaries on climate change by transnational audiences, and analyzes people's awareness and attitudes towards climate change as well as their attitudes towards the “future” revealed in their discussion. It is found that transnational audience's discussion mainly shows three relatively clear themes and on each theme there exists two types of opposing discourses side by side.It reveals that transnational audience's awareness and attitudes towards climate change is ambivalent, and “future” is also divided in their understanding. Finally, the paper discusses documentaries' role in the communication of climate change,as well as possible problems faced by them. The inherent characteristics of climate change may pose challenges to the communication effect of documentaries.
