On the Kinds and Uses of Wood Traded between the Song Dynasty and Japan

宋日之间民间贸易往来频繁,木材成为重要的交易品,两国之间形成了一条“木材之路”,连接两国的沿海及内陆地区。其中,从日本输入到宋的木材主要是松、杉和桧等,数量大且用途广;宋输出到日本的木材主要是紫檀等贵重木材,且只限于日本贵族阶层使用,两者性质具有很大的不同。通过分析宋日之间流通木材的种类及其用途,可进一步深化对宋日民间往来的认知。

There are frequent private trade exchanges between the Song Dynasty and Japan.Wood has become an important traded commodity and“the road of wood”between the two countries has connected the coastal and inland areas of both.The wood imported from Japan to the Song Dynasty is mainly pine, Cryptomeria japonica,Chamaecyparis obtusa and so on,which are large in quantity and widely used.In contrast,the wood exported to Japan is mainly precious wood like red sandalwood,used by the Japanese aristocracy alone.The analysis of the kinds and uses of the traded wood between the Song Dynasty and Japan can help to better understand the exchange between people in both countries.
