Androgyny is an important concept of feminist criticism and a new way of criticism in literature. In the 1980s and 1990s, American scholars raised the issue of male feminization in Hemingway's works and made great breakthroughs. Because the hero and heroine of Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls have seen clearly the hypocritical nature of the patriarchal society, they begin to deviate from the traditional male and female image standards and gradually form the consciousness of androgyny.
