Dynamic Symbols of “Fog” in The Buried Giant

石黑一雄新作《被掩埋的巨人》以中世纪时期动荡的英国为背景,从小人物出发,书写了一部记忆与遗忘之作。随着主人公埃克索和比特丽丝开启找寻儿子之旅,小说带领读者展开一场记忆追寻之旅,作为遮盖个体和集体记忆的“迷雾”成为值得探寻的对象。本文采用后结构主义文论视角,通过分析“迷雾”这一具有动态象征意义的重要意象,以及记忆作为一种隐喻预设如何让不列颠夫妇的身份特征得到重现,以期丰富对该小说的研究与探讨。

As Kazuo Ishiguro’s latest work, The Buried Giant is set in the turbulent Britain in the Middle Ages. Focusing on non-heroic characters, Ishiguro wrote a novel about memory and forgetting. As the protagonists-Axl and Beatrice step onto the journey to quest for their son, the novel leads its readers onto a journey of pursuit for memory, and the “fog” which covers individual and collective memory becomes an object worth exploring. This paper adopts the post-structural literary perspective to analyze the “fog”, an important image with dynamic symbolic meanings, and to present how memory, as a metaphorical presupposition, reshapes the identities of the British couple, hoping to enrich the study and exploration of the novel.
