Dewey: An Important Resource for Chinese Educational Modernization

2019年是杜威来华讲学100周年,一百年来杜威对中国教育现代化所发挥的作用已成为毋庸置疑的历史事实。其最为重要的作用是较早阐明了教育现代化的大方向与主要内涵,并提供了思考问题的参考方式。历史上对杜威的批判使中国教育现代化迟滞,教育思想教条化。回归生活是杜威最为丰富的思想和理论,也是目前中国教育尚未解决好的主要难题。在中国教育现代化进程中不能忽视杜威教育思想理论,其思想理论仍然是中国教育现代化的重要资源。

The year 2019 marks the 100 th anniversary of Dewey’s lectures in China. Dewey’s impact on the modernization of Chinese education is undeniable. Most importantly, he explained at an earlier stage what educational modernization means, where it would go, and provided a different perspective or way of thinking. Attacks on Dewey’s Educational Thought retarded Chinese educational modernization and left educational thought dogmatic. His conception of "back-to-life education", rich in connotation, is also a top challenge to current Chinese education. In its process of educational modernization, China should not ignore Dewey, which is still one of the most important resources.
