Diabetic retinopathy is the second largest blinding disease in the world, which can seriously harm the visual health of adults. Epigenetics acts as an intermediary between environment and genes, which can cause changes in gene expression function without changing gene sequences, including DNA methylation, histone modification, non-coding RNA and other mechanisms. Many studies have shown that epigenetics has important physiological significance for diabetic retinopathy, and specific genetic targets have been studied through animal experiments, which is conducive to the understanding of the specific mechanisms of diabetic retinopathy. If we can further study and dig out more accurate and specific epigenetic gene transcription mechanisms, it will open up a new era for diabetes.
