Gu Shiling and His Novels

顾诗灵的创作始于20世纪20年代初,其创作大体可分为两个时期:一是1924年到1930年的抒情感伤时期;二是1930年以后的叙事转向时期。在灰暗的氛围和感伤的语调中流露出悲观的情绪是其感伤时期创作的鲜明特点。从1930年代开始,顾诗灵的思想开始倾向左翼,以“左兵”为笔名的《天下太平》即是这方面的代表作。之后,顾诗灵从事革命的实际工作,创作锐减,逐渐淡出了文学界。虽然如此,顾诗灵(左兵)的代表作《天下太平》所体现的真实性、时代感及乡土气息以及由之生发的文学史意义不应忽视。

Gu Shiling started writing in the early 1920s. His career can be roughly divided into two phases, lyric and sentimental phase (1924-1930) and narrative and transitional phase (after 1930). The most prominent feature of his early works is pessimism overflowing the dismal atmosphere and gloomy tone he created. In the 1930s, Gu became a left-leaning writer and finished one of his representative works Tianxia Taiping (World in Peace) under the name of Zuo Bing, meaning a left soldier. After that, Gu devoted himself in revolution. With reduced literary creation, he faded out of literary circles. However, the authentic narration, the characteristics of that time, and the earthy writing style in World in Peace, as well as it significance in the history of literature, should never fade away.
