The structures of gapless relatives in Chinese and English differ in such aspects as the order of main clauses and relative clauses,the scope of uses and semantic interpretations.The Baseline/Elaboration Organization of Cognitive Grammar can provide a principled account for the structures of gapless relatives in Chinese and English.In Chinese,the conceptual semantics of gapless relative clauses constitutes the baseline and the head invokes an elaboration on the baseline,while in English the conceptual semantics of main clauses constitutes the baseline and the elaboration is based on the semantic relationship between main clauses and relative clauses.The differences in the Baseline/Elaboration Organization result in different conceptual structures of main clauses and relative clauses and reflect possible fundamental differences between the two languages.
