Kazuo Ishiguro’s A Pale View of Hills describes the protagonist Etsuko’s life after the Nagasaki atomic bombing in the Second World War through her recollection and retrospection. Her sad experience is deep and beyond words. Etsuko suffers from the trauma of war and the loss of her daughter Keiko. Based on a close reading of this novel, this paper makes a detailed analysis to Etsuko’s traumatic experience and her revelation, exploring the themes of history and personal memory. It is of practical significance to examine the ethical writing of history and memory in A Pale View of Hills. It reveals that the cruel war has done great harm to people’s life and their inner world and exerts great influence on both contemporary and future world.
