From Wandering to Awakening: On Zhang Boling’s Views on Japan

张伯苓作为近代著名的教育家,也是南开系列学校的创办人,他的转行教育源于日本的刺激,他也多次赴日考察,学习和借鉴日本的教育模式,并寻求日本的资金支持。因此,他前期对日本的认识是正面和积极的;后期随着日本不断扩大侵略中国的步伐,张伯苓认清了日本军国主义的本质,放弃了幻想,全力支持中华民族的抗战。

Zhang Boling is a famous educationist in modern times, and a founder of Nankai series schools. He shifted his career to education when stimulated by Japan. He went to Japan many times to study the Japanese education model, and sought financial support in Japan. He had a positive view of Japan originally. With the continuous expansion of Japanese aggression against China, Zhang Boling recognized the essence of Japanese militarism and gave up his illusions and fully supported the Chinese people’s anti-Japanese War.
