列女《传》《颂》《图》关系考论

On Relationship of Biography, Ode and Picture in Biographies of Exemplary Women

现署名为刘向的《列女传》是一传一颂一图的文本形态,然历史情况并非如此,不仅《传》《颂》《图》之作者存在分歧,而且各篇之间也多有亲疏离合关系,因此才造成了《列女传》七篇、八篇、十五卷等各种说法。此外,传、颂作为不同文体观念以及图像与文本之间相异的文化功能,也是导致《列女传》篇目与著录分合的主要原因。

Biographies of Exemplary Women, allegedly written by Liu Xiang, takes the format of text in the form of a biography, an ode, and a picture. But it is not historically right, for the different ideas about the authors of biographies, odes and pictures, and entangled relationship in the texts. Hence the spreading claim that Biographies of Exemplary Women comprises seven or eight scrolls, or fifteen volumes. Furthermore, the different stylistic concepts of biography and ode, and the different function of picture and text are also the main factors for the discord between the contents and compiling record of Biographies of Exemplary Women.
