From the perspective of Northrop Frye’s myth and archetypal criticism, Martha Quest, one of Doris Lessing’s masterpieces, is inextricably linked to Greek mythology. In the novel, Martha is a modern woman born in a new era, while Ms. Quest is a conservative mother raised in an old age. The different values between the two lead to an intricate mother/daughter relationship which is intertwined with love and hate. Exploring the archetypes of these two main female characters and their mother/daughter relationship in Greek mythology not only enables us to deeply understand the characters portrayed by Lessing, but also helps to clarify the underlying causes of Lessing’s mother/daughter relationship.
