The theory of "heart governs spirit" is a microcosm of the concept of form and spirit in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is clearly pointed out that the unity of form and spirit is inseparable from each other, that is, the unity of form and spirit is different from each other, which is very similar to the monism in modern science. The earliest edition of Huangdi Neijing is Taisu of Huangdi Neijing annotated by Yang Shangshan in Tang Dynasty. The ideological system of Huangdi Neijing is in harmony with the combination of the thoughts of thinkers and medical scientists before the Tang Dynasty, which is one of the important reasons for the formation of the theory of integration of form and spirit. The purpose of this paper is to sort out the historical context of the formation of the theory of the unity of form and spirit, which can be divided into four aspects: the origin of pantheism, the germination of materialism, the debate of the dualism of form and spirit, and the establishment of the monism of form and spirit. It briefly describes the main contents of each stage in order to let everyone better understand TCM and its history.
