The novel Disappearance takes a black Guyanese engineer as the observational object, and represents the cognition and transformation of cultural identity in different dimensions of two countries. In doing so, it reveals the crisis of cultural identity which commonly exists among residents in colonized areas. Based on the perspective of post-colonialism, this paper analyzes the protagonist’s psychologist transition from having a desire to “whitening” himself to finding his own national culture. It traces back the significant influence of colonial culture to the colonized residents after the end of colonial period, exploring the original reason why ethnic groups should want to get rid of “spiritual colonization” and find their own cultural attributes.
