The Generative Mechanism of ABCD-type Onomatopoeias in Beijing Dialect

北京话的ABCD式拟声词由双音节拟声词CD重叠变形而来,AB音节韵母的主元音有高化现象,其重音模块是[中轻中重],语法功能为状态词,用于口语语体,音强韵律具有形态作用。

The ABCD-type onomatopoeias refer to those quadrisyllabic ones composed of four different syllables in Beijing dialect.They are actually reduplicated forms of the disyllabic CD-type onomatopoeias,with phonological adaptation,viz.vowel raising,in AB syllables,due to metrical template constraints on the phonological representation of ABCD forms.Moreover,ABCD-type onomatopoeias are consistent with other quadrisyllabic prosodic compounds of the same metrical type in terms of both grammar and register.The metrical template may not only constrain the phonological representation of other types of onomatopoeias and reduplication words but serve morphological functions in prosodic morphology.
