The Sentimental Bond of Zeng Gong’s Clan with Yuezhou

曾巩家族中五世四代为官越州,与越州结下殊缘。曾巩祖父曾致尧曾任监越州酒税,清正敬业;曾巩父亲曾易占曾任越州节度推官,显示了出色的吏治才干;曾巩本人曾任越州通判,任内推行新法、组织救荒、重视水利,治绩显著,一直为后人怀念;曾巩孙子曾怘曾任监越州三江寨,铁骨铮铮,不肯屈服,合家死金人之难,独曾怘四岁幼子曾崈幸免于难;后曾崈居越州,为越州曾氏祖。研究表明,南丰曾氏一脉五世四代为官一地,实属罕见。

In Zeng Gong's clan,four out of five generations held official posts in Yuezhou,thus forming special ties of affections with Yuezhou.Zeng Gong's grandfather,Zeng Zhiyao,was in charge of liquor tax of Yuezhou and he was incorruptible and devoted to his work.Zeng Gong's father,Zeng Yizhan,held the post of military governorship of Yuezhou,showing his remarkable talent of administration.Zeng Gong himself held the post of Tongpan of Yuezhou.He made a promotion of new law,helped to tide over the crop failure and put an importance on water conservation.His governess achievements are remarkable and cherished by later generations all the time. Zeng Gong' grandson,Zeng Hu,was in charge of Sanjiangzhai of Yuezhou.He was firm and unyielding,and all his families got killed by the tribe of Jin,with only his four-year-old young son,Zeng Chong,escaping death by sheer luck.Later,Zeng Chong settled down in Yuezhou,becoming the ancestor of Zeng clan of Yuezhou.The research shows it is really rare that four out of five generations of Zeng clan in Nanfeng County held official posts in the same place.
