The Name of “Clique” and “Discourse of Loyalty”: On Du Fu’s Poems in Memorial of Chen Zi’ ang and others During the Turn of Emperor Suzong and Emperor Daizong of the Tang Dynasty

在肃宗排斥玄宗旧臣的背景下,杜甫因谏救房琯背上朋党污名,远走陇蜀。代宗即位后,形势发生变化,杜甫意在出仕。他用“终古立忠义”一语称赞陈子昂谏诤无私、公忠谋国,是借之为自己受污的过往正名,也是为重返朝廷提出理由。

In the context of Emperor Suzong's rejection of the old courtiers of Emperor Xuanzong, Du Fu was exiled to Gansu and Sichuan with the guilt of clique due to his dissuasion to save Fang Guan. After Daizong’s ascension, the situation changed and Du Fu intended to go back to be an official. He praised Chen Zi'ang's unselfishness and loyalty to the country in his poems. It was seen as the rectification his own taint in the past and the reason for returning to the court.
