Rene Wellek is a great theorist and critic of the 20^th century Anglo-American literature. His two major woks, Theory of Literature and A History of Modern Criticism which includes 8 volumes, are regarded as milestones in the research fields of literary theory and literary history. The previous studies on Wellek focus on his contributions to literary theory, history of literary criticism and critical methodology, and ignore his achievements on modern poetry criticism. But Wellek starts to publish reviews of modern poetry from the early stage of his critical career, and he is actually a key critic in this field. This paper intends to examine his contribution to the study of modern Anglo-American poetry, focusing on his criticism of some major critics of modern Anglo-American poetry.
