In the early days of the British colonial period in Sri Lanka,English language was introduced and promoted mainly by missionaries and missionary missions. In the 1830s,the report of the Colebrooke-Cameron Commission, which legally regulated English as the administrative, educational and judicial language of colonial rule, was implemented gradually and with far-reaching implications. In the early twentieth century, the origins of the nationalist ideology inspired an intense discussion among the indigenous languages and English as well as who became the official language among the indigenous languages. The language policy during the colonial period in Sri Lanka profoundly changed the pattern and structure of social education and strongly influenced the phonetics, vocabulary and grammar of indigenous languages (especially Sinhalese) and objectively nurtured the intellectuals of the younger generation in Sri Lankan, also indirectly stimulated the national contradictions after independence.
