Filipinos possess a nationwide enthusiasm towards beauty pageants and their representatives have achieved good results in international beauty contests. What the Philippines has a culture of pageantry rather than a tenacious obsession. Various kinds of pageants can be found in the Philippines, while modern beauty contest is a western form who took its root in the Philippines and produced comprehensive results-a performance of feminine culture. In this sense, beauty pageants date back to the town fiestas of Spanish colonial times. They were folk catholic activities embedded with Catholic gender conceptions and a high esteem of the Virgin Mary, as showcasedin Santacruzan. During American times, the format of modern beauty contests spread into the selection of Carnival Queen, resulted in early Miss Philippines contests. Since 1960 s, beauty pageant has proven to be a stimulus for tourist economy thus it was highly incorporated in local festivals.
