《莫须有先生传》是一部"奇书",情节简单、用笔零散但内容丰富、意蕴深刻。作为"独异个人"的知识分子,"莫须有先生"体民情、观儒礼,有心写一部乱世之"国风",匡扶天下、化育民心,但他最终发现芸芸众生不能为之说大乘法耳,只能无奈作罢。"莫须有先生"是废名的化身,考察废名对"莫须有先生"的失望之情即可体会他创作此书时的矛盾心境。

A Story of Mr. Mo Xuyou is a "fantastic book" with simple plots, fragmented expressions but rich contents and profound implications. As an intellectual of a "unique individuality","Mr. Mo Xuyou"was concerned with public sentiment and abides by the rituals of traditional Confucianism, for he was committed to write a book of poetry so as to advance the world and educate the people only to ultimately find the common public was quite beyond education, so he had no alternative but give up ultimately. Mr. Mo Xuyou is the substitute for the author Fei Ming, thus an exploration of Fei Ming’s disappointment over Mr. Mo Xuyou can reveal his ambivalence in the writing of the book.
