Purpose:To investigate the action of shock waves on the function of rabbit ureter. Method: A total of 30 mature New Zealand White rabbits (2. 0-3. 5 kg) were involved in the study. All of rabbits had to undergo two surgical procedures. At the first operation, the animals were anaesthesized and a pin was fixed to each over the psoas for shock wave focusing under fluoroscopy. At the second operation, the rabbits were sacrificed and their ureteral segments were taken out immediately for examination. These rabbits were randomly divided into six groups, each of which contains 5 ones ( n =5). Group 1 acted as the control and the rest worked as treatment groups. Rabbits were treated with an electrohydraulic lithotriptor (JDPN-JV , Shanghai, China) at 18 kV. Among them, Groups 2~4 equally received 2 000 shocks, and the second procedures were performed immediately after the treatment, one day and 5 days following the treatment respectively. Groups 5 and 6 also received 2 000 shocks but the treatment were repeated 2 and 4 times at a two-week intervals. Their preparations were obtained 2 weeks after the final treatment. Contractility of ureteral segments was measured in organ baths. The contractile responses of the ureters were induced by KCI of high concentration and the frequency and amplitude of contraction were recorded on a polygraph. Result: Functional study demonstrated that 94 mM. KCI was efficient to elicit biphasic contractions of isolated ureteral smooth muscle in both control and treatment groups in vitro. The amplitude of contractions of ureters in Groups 2 and 3 were significantly lower than that of the control ( P <0. 05). On the contrary, the frequency of contractions in these groups increased in spite of no significance. There was no definitive variation in the contractile force and frequency of ureteral smooth muscle between the control and Groups 4, 5, and 6. Conclusion; Ureteral contractile force could be reduced temporally following the shock wave treatment but expected to recover within 5 days in the main. It was possible that the contractility of ureter was hardly influenced by repeated treatment.
