Foreign direct investment (FDI) has carved an important niche for itself in the Chinese economy. This empirically based paper describes and analyzes in detail the significant roles it plays. There are a number of fields in which FDI can play a key role. These include providing new sources of capital, improving investment efficiency, strengthening the competitiveness of industries and enhancing the nation's ability to introduce and develop advanced technology, and promoteing its research and development capacity. In conclusion, FDI has not only become a dynamo behind the sustained growth of the Chinese economy: it is also changing the mode of economic growth and improving its quality as well.
