The Tangyu site, situated in Qingpu District, Shanghai City, was discovered in 1996 and excavated in 1998 in an area of more than 200sq m. As is known from the drilling and excavation, it was built on the eastern bank of an ancient river. The remains include vestiges of two timber buildings with large quantities of Longquan celadon and Jingdezhen shufu and greenish-white porcelain of the Yuan period and a small amount of blue-and-white ware of the Ming Dynasty. Judging from the data obtained through the drilling and digging, especially the porcelain, it can be preliminarily determined that the site was of a simple wharf constructed in the Yuan period and abandoned in Ming times. As a rather early wharf-site in the Shanghai area, it has great significance to the study of the history of the river system and waterway trade and traffic in this region.
