The effects of intraventricular injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) on the body temperature and thermoregulation were observed in the ground squirrel (Citellus dauricus). The results showed: (1) i. c. v. administration of 6-OHDA (200μg) was found to cause a mild (5℃) reduction in body temperature at room temperature, a greater fall (7℃) in 5℃ cold environment. The hypothermia recovered about 7 hours after administration of 6-OHDA at room temperature. (2) The acute hypothermia effect of 6-OHDA was abolished by central pre-administration of phentolamine. This blockade suggested that the acute hypothermia was the result of endogenous catecholamine release after administration of 6-OHDA. (3) Despite the marked actue thermal response to 6-OHDA, there appers to be no long-lasting effect on the temperature regulatory center. The ground squirrels treated with 6-OHDA were able to keep constant body temperature in cold environment 20 hours after 6-OHDA administration.
