Recent studies have revealed that Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are distributed within Olfactory ensheathing bulbs,Olfactory epithelium and Olfactory nerve. The cell can exhibit phenotypic and functional properties known to both Schwan cell in peripheral nervous system and astrocyte in central nervous system. When OECs were transplanted into injured areas of spinal cord ,these cells are able to survive and migrate in the injured location.Furthermore, The injured neuronal axonal regeneration, neurite growth and elongation are supported and guided with accompanying OECs migration. In addtion, Transgenic technological application might be undertaken to develop OECs carrying exgenous genes, which mediate neuronal regeneration in Spinal cord. With expression of these molecules,The appropriate environment for injured areas of nervous regeneration was created, and The potential of spinal cord regeneration manifested and the purpose of spinal cord funcational recovery would be achieved. In this article,The OECs biological properties, its application in spinal cord injury and genic therapy in CNS are reviewed.
