In response to the needs of princes and prominent officials in 18th century Beijing, a substantial group of portrait and figural painters emerged, of whom Leng Mu (father and son), Mangguli, Cm Hui, Xu Gui and Xu Zhang are representative. The earliest influence on the group was the figural painting style of the Qing Dynasty palace artist Jiao Bingzhen. All artists in the group had varying degrees of connection with the palace and were therefore subject stylistically to influences from the ' realism' of court figural painting and its admixture of Western painting techniques. Their works depict aspects of life in the princely mansions and urban Beijing, and the artistic styles, spheres of activity and modes of income of these artists have much in common.
