This article compares the novel The Biography of Liu Shi. which was written by Xu Yaozuo of the Tang Dynasty, with the opera The Story about a Golden Coin written by Qiao Ji of the Yuan Dynasty. The article explains that the image of Han Hong in the former is the image of the traditional scholar who was deeply influenced by the Confucian culture, whereas the image of Han Hong in the latter is an image of a popular scholar who was affected by the pop culture. The article also inquires into the cause of the creation of the image of Han Hong in The Story about a Golden Coin from the following two aspects; the spread and change of the story of Han Hong and the townspeople's consciousness. The article explains that the popular literary script of story-telling in Song and Yuan folk literature and the Nan Opera and so on influenced the creation of the Yuan Drama, and that the pop culture of the Yuan Dynasty transformed both the writers themselves and the characters in their works. The characters they portrayed became the images of popular culture.
