天可汗的光与影——费子智、谷川道雄撰唐太宗传记两种之研究

The Light and Shadow of Heavenly Khan: A Study of Two Tang-Taizong Biographies by C.P. Fitzgerald and Tanikawa Michio

唐代是古代中国对世界最有吸引力的朝代之一。上个世纪以来,欧美及日本涌现出为数不少的关于唐太宗李世民的人物传记。而国内学界对于这些海外唐太宗人物传记作品的翻译或研究,或限于语言障碍,或限于文献获取,迄今进展不大,甚为可惜。本文选取国内尚未介译过的、上世纪三十及六十年代费子智(1902-1992,C.P.Fitzgerald)的Son of Heaven:A Biography of Li Shih-Min,Founder of the T’ang Dynasty与谷川道雄(1925-2013)的《唐の太宗》这两种英文、日文的人物传记。通过分析他们的传记描写结构、手法,特别是选取具体事件的叙述方式,来探求欧美及日本对于唐帝国鼎盛期的缔造者——'天可汗'唐太宗的描写、构造、想象的异同之处,以及他们写作思想之时代烙印、学术背景及相关深层次理路。

The Tang Dynasty is one of the most attractive dynasties in ancient China.Since the last century,there have been a number of biographies about Li Shih-min,Emperor Taizong of Tang,in Europe,America and Japan.However,due to the barriers of language or the restrictions of documents acquiring,the translation or the research on these overseas biographies about Emperor Taizong of Tang is still in an almost blank state,which is a great pity.This essay chooses two biographies which have never been translated in China:one is Son of Heaven:A Biography of Li shih-Min,Founder of the T’ang Dynasty by C.P.Fitzgerald,and the other is Emperor Taizong of Tang by Tanikawa Michio.The former is written in English in the 1930 s,while the latter is written in Japanese in the 1960 s.By analyzing their narrative structures and description techniques,especially the narrative modes of choosing specific event,this essay aims at discussing the similarities and differences on describing,constructing and imaging the founder of the flourishing period of the Tang Empire–'Heavenly Khan,'Emperor Taizong of Tang,between Europe,America and Japan,as well as the time influence and academic background of their writing thoughts,and relevant deep scholastic methodologies.
