This paper interprets Naipaul's A Bend in the River from the perspective of postcolonial ecocriticism. In those newly politically independent African countries, the western colonial existence and the despotism are threatening the African jungles which physically and spiritually accomodate the Africans. Jungles provide the Africans with physical shelter and home, and spiritually protect them. Undermined by the western colonial existence and the despotism, jungles are suffering from ecological damage, loss of traditions and severing of the past and the present so much so that the spirits of the ancestors inhabiting the jungle can no longer bless the offsprings.
