福建平潭四面环海,贝壳资源丰富,平潭贝雕工艺兴盛于20世纪50年代初,后因市场不济而逐渐走向衰退。近年来,平潭旅游业的开发以及当地政府对传统技艺的重视为平潭贝雕工艺的发展带来了新的契机。平潭工艺界以独特的制作技艺将贝壳与其他媒材相结合,开发设计贝雕产品,促进了贝雕工艺的多元化繁荣。平潭贝雕艺术蕴含着平潭地区独特的文化特征,对海岛旅游业的发展发挥了积极的作用。

Surrounded by sea, Pingtan in Fujian is abundant in shell resources. The technology of Pingtan shell carving flourished in the early 1950 s and gradually declined due to the weak market. In recent years, the development of Pingtan tourism resources and the local government’s emphasis on traditional techniques have brought a new opportunity for the development of Pingtan shell carving technology. With unique production techniques, the craftsmen in Pingtan develop and design shell carving products by combining shells and other materials, which promotes a diversified technology of shell carving. The art of Pingtan shell carving embodies unique cultural characteristics of Pingtan area and plays a positive role in the development of its tourism.
