The relationship between the Stone and Nuwa in the myth about Nuwa repairing the heavens implies there are limitations to the combination of the ultimate goal of Confucianism and feudal monarchical rule. The tragedy of the Stone’s not having the opportunity to help repair the heavens reveals the paradox of Confucianism being ruined by its very ideal because it attempts at too high an ideal. The Stone’s shame complex shows that the Confucian ideal of combining inner sagehood and outer kingship results in an ethical cynicism and feeble mindedness in China's cultural psychology. That Attendant Shen-ying turns from tianli (heavenly principle) to human emotions in his value orientation demonstrates the crisis experienced by Confucianism in the real world with regard to the ultimate goal.
