Zhu Yulin was the leader of a literary group in Shanghai in the 1960s,and also a secret translator of Baudelaire. He translated The Flowers of Evil, but only eight of his poem translations can be read today. With good knowledge of both two languages, poetic traditions and cultures,Zhu,inspired by his personal pain, produced an excellent translation walking between fidelity and freedom. His translation not only allows us to reflect upon the art of translation, but also updates our understanding of contemporary translation history.
