An Aesthetic Interpretation of “Unscenic Nature” in Thaxter’s Works

19世纪美国作家西莉亚·撒克斯特的作品记录了她所生活的海岛上的优美自然风景。《海岛花园》与《海岛生活》两部散文作品,体现了撒克斯特对“具有审美挑战性的自然”所持的审美态度,即:自然审美方式是多种多样的,“科学认知模式”并不是实现“自然全美”的唯一途径,环境在审美评价中也非常重要,因而人类应当以无偏私的态度欣赏自然。

Celia Thaxter was a 19th-century American writer whose works record the beautiful natural scenery of the island where she lived.Two of her prose works,An Island Garden and Among the Isles of Shoals,embody her aesthetic attitude towards“scenically challenging nature”.To sum up,the methods of appreciating nature can be various;“scientific cognitive model”will never be the only way in realizing the concept of“all nature is beautiful”;environment plays an important role in aesthetic assessment so human beings should impartially look at nature.To analyze the works of nature writing within the framework of positive aesthetics can not only bring a new perspective in literary studies,but also provide verification as well as development for positive aesthetics itself.
