Yuan Zuzhi: The Image Maker of the Concession in Shanghai

袁祖志是19世纪末上海租界洋场文人的典型代表。从1872年开始,袁祖志在《申报》上发表了大量竹枝词,以风土诗的形式不断地建构着上海都市社会景观。同时,他在租界繁华的四马路附近建造了“杨柳楼台”,不仅成为海内外文人争相拜访、吟咏的对象,甚至还成为众多洋场文人在现代都市中寻找身份认同的一个文化符号。此外,袁祖志还具有鲜明的现代传播意识。他借助《申报》的媒介平台,同步宣传他在光绪九年(1883年)的域外之行,并在诗词唱酬的过程中建构着庞大的文人交际网络。从这个意义上来说,袁祖志具有醒觉的都市意识,是现代上海都市的形象制造者(image maker)。

Yuan Zuzhi is the representative of Concession literati in Shanghai at the end of 19th century.From 1872,Yuan Zuzhi published a large number of Zuzhi Ci in Shunpao and constructed urban landscape of Shanghai constantly by the local poetry.At the same time,he established the house of willow in the flourishing Concession Four Road which not only was visited and intoned by Concession Literati but also became a cultural symbol for Concession Literati to look for identity in the modern city.In addition,Yuan Zuzhi had the sense of modern communication.He propagandized his overseas travel in 1883 synchronously in Suhunpao and constructed his large social network of Shanghai Literati.From this significance,Yuan Zuzhi had the typical urban consciousness.He is the image maker of urban Shanghai in the modern significance.
