In the modern society which advocates freedom and democracy,the significance of discipline to education is often underestimated or even criticized.With his eulogy of discipline,Bueb,the entired principal of Germany s famous aristocratic high school,aroused a heated debate in the whole country,but has also been strongly criticized.The controversy between Bueb and his opponents shows the fierce collision between the traditional and the modern educational concept.In fact,the nature of children and the essence of education have not changed in modern society.Modern education should still take discipline as its basis.However,such discipline should not be based on power and oppression as it used to be,but should fully respect and stimulate children s autonomy.
