Taine believes that the material nature of material civilization and spiritual civilization depends on three major factors:race, environment and times. The article analyzes the characteristics of modern Japanese design, and discusses the performance of Dana's"three elements"in modern Japanese design with relevant design cases. After the Second World War,the Japanese design community focused on the protection of traditional and national aspects while developing internationalist design, and formed a design with distinctive national colors. The emergence and development of modern Japanese design is driven by the three elements of race, environment and times. The three elements determine the nature of modern Japanese design and confirm the ingenuity of Taine's theory.
