Gender Culture Interpretation on “Peacock Flying to the Southeast”

“孔雀东南飞”的现象在大学生群体当中普遍存在,但“东南飞”并不一定是大学生主动选择的结果。来自西部的很多女大学生,读书的目的不是“回报家乡”,而是“逃离故土”。在传统父权和夫权色彩浓厚的西部农村地区,“回家”并不是一个温馨的词,而是意味着“为家庭效力”与“和当地人结婚”。女性在农村家庭中“低人一等”的地位和女大学生日渐独立的个性之间形成了尖锐的矛盾,回避这一矛盾的方法就是“东南飞”。对这部分女大学生来说,“东南飞”表达了她们对传统文化习俗的反抗,是她们“被迫”“不得不”做出的一个选择。被动的“东南飞”背后折射出来的男权社会、轻视女性的文化观念值得我们重视:即便是新时代的女大学生,似乎也未能彻底从这样一种文化窠臼中解放出来。

The phenomenon of“peacock flying to the southeast”is common among the college students,but the“peacock flying to the southeast”is not necessarily the result of college students’active choice.Many female college students from the west do not study for the purpose of“repaying the construction of their homeland”,but to“escape from their homeland”.In the western rural areas with strong traditional patriarch society and patriarchal rights,“going home”is not a warm word,but it means“serving the family”and“marrying the local people”.There is a sharp contradiction between the women’s inferior status in the rural families and their increasingly independent personality.The way to avoid the contradiction is to fly to the southeast.For these female college students,“flying to the southeast”expresses their resistance to the traditional culture and customs,which is a choice they have to make.The cultural concept of patriarchal society and despising women reflected in the passive“flying to the southeast”deserves our attention:even the female college students in the new era do not seem to be completely liberated from such a cultural stereotype.
