“Gawu”comes from Hokkien of Taiwan. The meaning of“ga”is“contest”,but“ga”is a phonetic word. Its original meaning is“ganga(awkwardness or embarrassment)”,which mainly appears in the form of“ganga”in the history of Chinese language.Generally,it cannot be used alone, neither can it be used to form words. After“gawu”was introduced to the mainland, people misinterpreted it as“awkward dance”by taking it too literally. Thus a series of“ga”words appeared to express a state of embarrassment and disorientation.
