The experience of Professor LONG Xiang-Yu in treating lumbar disc herniation with massage based on syndrome and stage classification was summarized. Based on the illness stages and clinical symptoms of lumbar disc herniation,Professor LONG Xiang-Yu divided lumbar disc herniation by acute stage and persisting stage,and classified into pain-predominant, numbness-predominant, and intermittent-claudication-predominant types. Massage manipulations for acute stage of lumbar disc herniation should be mild firstly and then be deep and through by gradually increasing strength,and manipulations for persisting stage of lumbar disc herniation should be mainly for tonifying and should be performed on the Bladder Meridian,the Governor Vessel and the innervation area of the affected neural segment. Massage manipulations for pain-predominant type should be mainly for relieving inflammation and pain and for adjusting the intervertebral space;manipulations for numbnesspredominant type should be mainly for tonifying and should be performed on the region along the meridians to reinforce Qi and nourish blood,so as to promote the recovery of sensation and muscle strength of the innervation area of the affected neural segment;manipulations for intermittent-claudication-predominant types should be mainly for activating blood to unblock collaterals and promote the blood circulation, and the area range of manipulations should be enlarged,so as to improve the blood supply of the overall lumbar spinal canal. Syndromebased treatment and staging treatment with massage manipulations for lumbar disc herniation can ensure the standardization of the manipulations and can achieve satisfactory effect.
