Many Neolithic shell middens and dune sites along the coast of Beibu Gulf had been investigated in last half century. The subsistence and life style of these ruins is identified as fishing, hunting and gathering by using ma-rine resources. The stable maritime economy occupies the main position in the subsistence system, highlighting the distinct maritime cultural characteristics in the Beibu Gulf. The early maritime culture of the Beibu Gulf coasts existed in 4000-7000 years ago, and it was characterized by adaptation and utilization of the oceanic resources. The early maritime culture along the Beibu Gulf coast developed on the basis of the late Paleolithic and early Neolithic cultures in the region. It was the result of early migration of hunter-gatherers to the coastal areas of Beibu Gulf.
