Chen Zhi’s Achievements in the Study of Chinese Gardening History

陈植的中国造园史研究成就包括四个方面:(1)追根溯源,考释"造园"词义,指出"造园"一词乃中国传统词汇,全面考索与"造园"相关的园、苑、囿等7个单词和苑囿、园囿、园林等22个复词,分析古今"造园"异同,揭示古今"造园"的历史沿革;(2)编纂中国造园史,遍考历代各类苑囿、庭园、陵园、宗教园及造园家、造园著作,历时半个多世纪,编成《中国造园史》一书,其对中国造园史研究的草创之功,功不可没;(3)整理造园古籍,校、注、考、释《园冶》《长物志》,蒐集、选编、注解历代园记,造就《园冶注释》《长物志校注》《中国历代名园记选注》三部造园史论古籍的权威本;尤其对《园冶》,在促成再版、考证版本、点校文字、注释内容等方面的工作,至今泽被后人;(4)对造园史若干专门问题的个案研究,在叠山方面,遍考历代叠山现象和叠山家,指出欲研究我国造园必先从筑山开始考察;在圆明园方面,指出长春园最北部的"西洋楼"的建筑风格总体属于巴洛克式,庭园风格属于意大利规则式,"水木明瑟"一景也是模仿苏州水木明瑟园而成的传统风格;对计成、李渔、文震亨三大造园家的生平、著作及造园成就亦揭示颇多。

Chen Zhi’s research achievements in the history of Chinese gardening include four aspects. First,he interpreted the meaning of"gardening"and pointed out that the term"gardening"has been used in Chinese language since ancient time. He also examined 29 other words related to"gardening", made a contrast between ancient and modern gardening and revealed the development process of gardening. Second, he made a study on various kinds of gardens, cemeteries, religious gardens, gardeners and gardening works of the past generations, and compiled a book entitled History of Chinese Gardening, which is an important contribution to the study of Chinese gardening history. Third, he sorted out antient works on gardening and wrote three books,Annotation of YuanYe, Notes on Zhangwuzhi and Selection of Famous Chinese Garden Records, which are authoritative in gardening research. Especially his effort in promoting the reprint, version research, collation and annotation of Yuanye, the ancient work, has extended benefits to later researchers. Fourth, he made indepth case studies about artificial hill making, Yuanmingyuan Park and so on. Besides, he made researches on three gardeners, Ji Cheng, Li Yu, and Wen Zhenheng, about their lives, works and achievements in gardening.
