Each year on November 11, known as Singles Day, an online shopping promotion is held in China. The event was started by Taobao Mall (Tmall), a dedicated platform for third-party brands and retailers of Alibaba Group, on November 11, 2009. Ten years ago, although the number of merchants and promotion efforts involved were limited, the sales far exceeded expectations, which prompted Tmall to make it an annual event.
