Emperor Han Wudi Receives Wei Qing: The Squatting Emperor and the Lavatory Habits of the Han Elites

《汉书》中有汉武帝"踞厕"视卫青和"轩中"得幸卫子夫的记载,历代注家对此解说纷纭,史家亦籍此探讨汉武帝与卫氏外戚之间的关系。然而由古人日常生活视角考察其中的场景与器物,并参照相关物质文化资料,它又揭示出汉代部分贵族的坐便习惯,再现了汉帝国统治者日常活动和生活状态的某些方面。

In Hanshu, it was recorded that Emperor Han Wudi received General Wei Qing while squatting over toilet, also that he had a romantic encounter with Consort Wei Zifu on an imperial tour in a lavatory. Historians expressed their different interpretations of these events and explored the relationship between Emperor Han Wudi and the relatives of the imperial Consort Wei Zifu. The two events showcase and provide a historical lens of lavatory activities in the ancient Han dynasty period. Using these historically documented circumstances along with archaeological evidence, this paper explores some aspects of the Han elites’ daily activities and lives.
