Discussion on Yang Xianyi’s Translation Thought

杨宪益是我国当代成就卓越的文学翻译大师,为我国翻译事业的发展作出了重大贡献。杨先生毕生从事翻译,译作数量惊人,其名声在翻译界如雷贯耳,但却没有专门著作阐述其翻译思想。为此,本文通过查阅相关研究资料,对其翻译思想及其起源进行了探讨。研究发现,杨宪益翻译思想内涵极其丰富,他对翻译目的、翻译标准、可译性都有自己独特的见解,其翻译原则是以“翻译即临摹”为认知基础的“忠实于原作”,其“文化翻译观”是:翻译是语言背后的两种文化的交流和对话。杨宪益的翻译思想根植于其深厚的学术功底,是在其一生不断的翻译实践过程中逐步形成的。

Yang Xianyi is a literary translation master who has achieved great achievements in contemporary China and has made a great contribution to the development of translation in China.He has translated a great number of works,but he has no special theoretical works to systematically explain his own translation thought.In this paper,the author,starting with Yang Xianyi's translation practice,sorts out and integrates the translation thought scattered in the prefaces and epilogues of his translation works and involved in his speeches in the translation forums,and looks up the relevant research materials,discusses Yang Xianyi's translation thought and its origin.It is found that the connotation of Yang Xianyi's translation thought is extremely rich.He has his own unique views on translation purposes,translation criteria and translatability.His principle of translation is"the fidelity to the original work"based on the cognition"translation is copying".His"cultural translation concept"is as follows:Translation is the exchange and dialogue of two cultures behind language,so the translator should faithfully convey the value and soul of Chinese culture to the target readers through translation,and convey the life of the Chinese and their joy and sorrow.Yang Xiany's translation thought is rooted in his profound academic background,which is gradually formed in the process of translation practice throughout his life.
